HUID is a material development that converts onion skins into home compostable smart packaging materials.

Using a globally abundant source of food waste, HUID has created a scalable alternative to single use plastic films and rigid materials – with added benefits.  Using biological processing instead of harsh chemicals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions at scale, HUID aims to provide better working conditions as biorefinery at scale.  To truly use the onion skins to its full potential, HUID also extracts the anti-microbial compounds found in onion skins, and integrates them into their materials to create smart materials that can help preserve perishable foods for longer – tackling food waste.

HUID’s onion-skin fibre paper also presents a more sustainable alternative to wood fibre paper for disposable packaging.

HUID’s materials are truly a triple (waste) threat – fighting plastic waste, fighting onion waste and fighting food waste.
