Together with local urban-poor communities (kampung) in Indonesia, we aim to reimagine the future public space through co-creation

Long description

Bursting with 16,000 residents per square kilometer, Jakarta stands out as one of the world’s densest cities – as a consequence of rapid urbanization. However, this remarkable population surge has not been met with equivalent support from its infrastructure, evident in sparse green and public spaces, barely reaching 5% of the city’s land area, far below the 30% target set by Law Number 26 of 2007.

Compelled by this issue, our team of designers from Indonesia and The Netherlands focus our efforts to co-create sustainable public space with Jakarta’s dense urban-poor communities known as “kampung”, with a case study in Kampung Susun Kunir. With the families of Kunir, we seek to understand what public space and sustainability means for kampungs by looking for inspiration in the past, seeing what we can do today to make a lasting impact for generations to come.
