Over one billion of the world’s population live in slum houses (SHs), mostly self-built. Approximately-one-third of this population is in Africa and South America. Due to their poor construction and lack of mechanical cooling in hot regions, SHs are particularly vulnerable to overheating and ongoing climate change. This project presents the overheating mitigation results of a DIY, and low-cost roof upgrade for a typical SH in Latin America & the Caribbean (LAC) to allow residents self-improvement. The mitigation strategy, used an insulation board made from recycled Tetrapak packages (ReTIBS) joined with duct tape and hanged to its typical roof. ReTIBS strategy has been studied, applied to a test cell, and measured to verify its degree of mitigation. The collected data was finally used to build a calibrated simulation model which was applied to eight cities in LAC, showing SHs internal temperature improving of about 3º C.
