Introduced in April 2023, the “Statiegeldbak” was conceived with the specific aim of becoming a recognizable “street icon.”. The intent was not only to provide both an aesthetic and utilitarian urban object but also to contribute significantly to various aspects of societal value. To effectively gauge its impact across diverse domains, we initiated the design process. Our approach from the outset was rooted in the understanding that the “Statiegeldbak” works on the basis of community involvement and should transcend its primary purpose of ‘’just’’ managing waste. In addition to its practical utility, our goal was to integrate it seamlessly into the everyday routine, ensuring it becomes a familiar and significant presence in public spaces. The Statiegeldbak allows individuals to willingly deposit their valuable recyclables, providing an opportunity for those in need of financial incentives to gather and exchange them for their deposit value.
